Paper I – ELECTROMAGNETICS THEORY AND MODERN OPTICS
Time: Three hours                                                                                               Maximum: 80 marks
Answer ALL questions.
All questions carry equal marks.

1.                 (a) Write Maxwell’s equations and discuss their significance.
           (b) Discuss the propagation of electromagnetic waves in an isotropic  
                  dielectric  medium.
Or
            (c) Obtain relations for the reflection and refraction.
            (d) What are retarded potentials? Discuss their significance in  
                    electromagnetic wave  propagation.
2.                 (a) What are Einstein’s coefficients? Discuss the absorption and emission
                    processes  in a two level system.
(b) Discuss how population inversion can be obtained in a three level 
        system.
Or
(c) Obtain the threshold condition for laser production.
(d) Discuss line broadening mechanisms for a laser beam.
3.                 (a) Discuss how second harmonic generation can be obtained.
(b) Describe how optical mixing is achieved.
Or
(c) Give the basic theory of holography.
(d) Discuss how holograms are recorded and reconstructed.
4.                 (a) Describe different optical fiber modes and configurations.
(b) Discuss light wave propagation in a step indexed fiber.
Or
(c) Write about signal degradation in optical fiber communications.
(d) Describe how dispersion affects signal propagation through optical fiber.
5.                 Write short notes on any TWO of the following:
a)    Lienard-Wiechert potentials.
b)    Semiconductor GaAs laser.
c)     Self-focussing of light.
                              d) Graded index fiber.
